Important: Estimates for Educational Use Only

Rates are estimates for educational use only and are not a binding quote. InsurTool is not an insurance agent or broker. This tool does not provide insurance, financial, or legal advice. Your actual premium depends on underwriting, health class, tobacco use, state of residence and the carrier you choose. Consult a licensed insurance agent before buying any policy.

How We Estimate Your Premium

We use a transparent, parametric method. The estimated monthly premium is:

Monthly premium = (base rate per $1,000 of coverage for your age and biological sex, non-smoker / Standard class, 20-year term) × (coverage ÷ $1,000) × term factor × smoker factor

  • Base rate per $1,000 — the monthly cost per $1,000 of coverage for a non-smoking Standard-class applicant on a 20-year term, anchored to 2026 published rate benchmarks by age and sex (see table below). Ages between anchors are interpolated linearly.
  • Coverage factor — scales linearly with the death benefit (e.g., $500,000 = 500 units of $1,000).
  • Term factor — relative to a 20-year term: 10-year ≈ 0.62, 15-year ≈ 0.80, 20-year = 1.00, 30-year ≈ 1.55. Longer terms cost more because the insurer carries mortality risk across more years.
  • Smoker factor — 3.0× the non-smoker base rate, reflecting that smokers commonly pay 200-300% more across carriers.

This is a simplified model for education. Real underwriting also weights health class (Preferred vs Standard vs substandard), build, family history, occupation and hobbies. Preferred-class applicants pay less than the Standard figures shown.

2026 Benchmark Rate Table — Non-Smoker, $500,000, 20-Year Term

These anchors feed the estimator above. Figures are monthly premiums for a Standard-class non-smoker and reflect 2026 industry benchmarks (insurancecostguides, drawn from NAIC/III.org references, retrieved 2026-09-10; ValuePenguin average-cost data, retrieved 2026-09-10).

AgeMale (per mo)Female (per mo)Smoker (≈ 3×)
25$32$27≈ $96 / ≈ $81
30$37$31≈ $111 / ≈ $93
35$48$40≈ $144 / ≈ $120
40$72$59≈ $216 / ≈ $177
45$112$93≈ $336 / ≈ $279
50$178$144≈ $534 / ≈ $432
55$285$226≈ $855 / ≈ $678
60$475$364≈ $1,425 / ≈ $1,092
65$593$457≈ $1,779 / ≈ $1,371

Ages 70-75 are extrapolated from the 60-65 trend and shown as wider estimates. Women pay 15-25% less than men of the same age; smokers pay roughly 3× the non-smoker figure.

Methodology & Data Sources

Base rates are anchored to 2026 published term-life benchmarks: insurancecostguides.com "Life Insurance Cost by Age in 2026" (verified April 2026 against NAIC, III.org and public actuarial sources, retrieved 2026-09-10) and ValuePenguin "Average Cost of Life Insurance by Age, Term & Coverage" (20-year $500k non-smoker averages, retrieved 2026-09-10). The Insurance Information Institute (III.org) documents the structural patterns used for term-factor and smoker-factor scaling (term life majority of new policies; smokers pay roughly 2-3× non-smokers). All computed figures are illustrative estimates for education, not quotes. Confirm any purchase with a licensed agent and read the policy contract.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a $500,000 20-year term life policy per month in 2026?+

For a healthy non-smoking 30-year-old, about $31/month for a female and $37/month for a male (Standard class). A 40-year-old pays roughly $59-$72/month and a 50-year-old about $144-$178/month. Smokers pay roughly 3× these figures. These are illustrative estimates, not binding quotes.

Why does smoking raise term life premiums so much?+

Tobacco use shortens life expectancy, so insurers price smokers far higher. Across carriers, smokers commonly pay 200-300% more than non-smokers for the same coverage. Our estimator applies a 3× smoker multiplier to the non-smoker base rate.

How does term length affect the monthly premium?+

Longer terms cost more because the insurer carries mortality risk across more years. Relative to a 20-year term, a 10-year term runs about 62%, a 15-year about 80%, and a 30-year about 155% of the monthly cost. Premiums are level for the full term.

Are these estimates a real insurance quote?+

No. The figures are illustrative educational estimates built from 2026 published rate benchmarks (NAIC/III.org references and public carrier aggregations compiled by insurancecostguides and ValuePenguin), retrieved 2026-09-10. Your actual premium depends on underwriting, health class, state and carrier. Always confirm with a licensed agent.
